9. Professional Growth - Inventory & Evidence
The Scholarship of Discovery: The Scholarship of Discovery is the range of research, professional development activities, and professional involvement undertaken which is used by the Library faculty member to use as a framework of publications and presentations, keep current with trends and changes in the profession to better serve the needs of instructional faculty, students and other library users and to recommend changes in library policies or procedures to reflect ongoing changes in the profession.
The Scholarship of Integration: The Scholarship of Integration occurs when one field of learning connects with another body of knowledge. The products that result from these interactions often result in new and exciting paradigms, bodies of knowledge, programs, and experiences. In the library setting, this might take forms such as (but not limited to) collaborating on projects promoting the Library or librarianship, or using the new knowledge or paradigms to design or redesign programs, policies, procedures, or instructional or other materials.
A. Library Standards and Expectations
Scholarly and Creative Activities
__________ is expected to show evidence of no less than three (3) scholarly/creative contributions during the probationary period, including publication of at least one paper in a refereed journal (or the equivalent, see below) during the probationary period. These contributions may be accomplished either individually or collaboratively, and should be related to librarianship or __________’s area of specialization, or his/her/their professional or campus service.
Assessment of these activities will be based on a number of factors. Consideration will be given to the selection process involved, and whether it reached a local, state, national, or international audience. Recognition, feedback and usage may also be considered, including references in other works, and conference session evaluations. Similar considerations will be made for published research, grant proposals, reports, and other scholarly and creative activities.
Scholarly and creative activities may include, but are not limited to:
_______will publish at least one paper in a refereed journal during the probationary period. Due to the nature of the professional literature in librarianship, some journals are not refereed, but are considered to be valuable resources to practitioners in the field. ________may provide written justification of the article's value, or may substitute completion of a book, or two other types of publication such as articles in non-refereed journals, book chapters, etc...for one refereed article.
In order to meet the above expectations, publications must be published or accepted for
publication (i.e. documented with a letter of unconditional acceptance). Publications
accepted pending revisions are not acceptable. Self-published works are not acceptable.
Professional Development
Professional Affiliations: During the probationary period, ________ is expected to maintain memberships in at least three (3) professional organizations at the local, state and/or national level relevant to librarianship, his/her/their areas of specialization, or his/her/their professional or campus service. _________ is expected to be actively involved at least twice during the probationary period. Examples of involvement include but are not limited to: service as an officer or committee chair / member; editor or reviewer for a professional organization’s journal, newsletter, wiki, etc.; or event organizer or volunteer.
Professional Growth: To maintain professional currency in his/her/their field as well as other areas of interest, _________is expected to engage in a minimum of four professional development activities annually, including but not limited to the following:
B. Methods to Evaluate Progress
The Library Faculty Peer Review Committee will review publications, reviews of those publications, presented papers, citations to those papers, grant proposals, and other materials and documentation submitted to assess _______’s contribution to the field.
The Library Faculty Peer Review Committee will assess the professional development memberships and activities for relevance to _________’s professional contributions and growth. Assessment of this involvement will be based on a number of factors including the level of participation (i.e. for how long and in what capacity), the impact of service, and the level (local, state or national) of the professional organization.

Research reports and studies published in other ways (such as issued by governmental organizations, NGOs, educational or research organizations) are also appropriate, as is editing a book of contributions by other authors that includes a chapter he/she/they wrote. These publications may be sole or joint authorship. If the latter, _____will be expected to describe his/her/their contribution to the publication.

- Professional Presentations: __________may give presentations at conferences, workshops or seminars/webinars, including papers and poster presentations (whether in person or online). Presentations may be at the local, state, national, or international levels.
- Creative Works: __________may include documentation of creative works such as learning objects, educational media or tools, tutorials, websites or software.
- Grant Writing: __________may participate in the writing and submission of a grant(s) during the probationary period. _________is expected to be the PI or Co-PI on the grant. This could be a private, local, state or national grant, and may be written in conjunction with library, university, or outside colleagues. Internal grants made by the University will not be considered as meeting this requirement. If _________works on a grant proposal, he/she/they is/are expected to work with the appropriate campus office.
Professional Development
