Leadership

I have had many opportunities for leadership in my current and past positions, including serving as Associate Dean of the Fresno State Library from 2016-2018. This position allowed me to gain experience in the following areas:
  • Shaping strategic initiatives, establishing priorities, assessing outcomes, and planning for a library future that is aligned with the university’s strategic plan.
  • Developing and cultivating library services, spaces, and programs that promote inclusiveness and accessibility and support the needs of Fresno State’s diverse and multicultural community.
  • Providing leadership in ensuring that the library’s collections and resources support the teaching and research needs of the university’s faculty, students, and staff.
  • Improving library-wide organizational efficiency and effectiveness by working with others to identify needed policies and update existing policies.
  • Staffing and personnel issues, including hiring for new and existing faculty and staff positions, supervising and evaluating staff, faculty and staff discipline issues, and salary and classification adjustments.
  • Consulting with library leadership on resource allocation and budget decisions.
  • Completing the ACRL Academic Library Trends and Statistics Survey, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) survey administered by the Chancellor’s Office, and drafting the library's annual report.
  • Representing the Dean of the Library on committees when needed; engaging with stakeholders and supporting the library’s relationships with other CSUs and professional library organizations.

In my previous role as Research Services Coordinator at Fresno State, I was responsible for:
  • Overseeing data collection and assessment strategies for instruction sessions, workshops, virtual reference (email reference and QuestionPoint chat), and Research Help desk interactions.
  • Working with Research Services personnel to coordinate staffing of the Research Help desk.
  • Monitoring the department’s need for instruction space and working with the Center for Faculty Excellence, library, and facilities staff on issues as they arise.
  • Coordinating Research Services participation in faculty and student outreach events.
  • Coordinating QuestionPoint 24/7 chat service; serving as point person for training, scheduling, and monitoring service quality.
  • Coordinating Research Services outreach/marketing efforts in collaboration with Marketing and Communications staff.
  • Working with Research Services staff and faculty on reference collection issues.
  • Performing collection development and management of the Popular Reading Collection.
  • Developing an annual Work Plan for Research Services that outlines responsibilities and goals for the coming year. Ensuring progress and accountability in the accomplishment of these goals.
Below is the leadership philosophy I developed as part of my participation in the 2018 President's Leadership Academy at Fresno State. It outlines my priorities and personal philosophy of leadership - both in my personal and professional life.
